What Clients Say About Family Therapy at DHTC

Frequently Asked Questions

What is family therapy?

Family therapy is a collaborative process that involves one or more family members working with a trained therapist to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and resolve conflicts. This approach helps families navigate challenges, foster understanding, and create a more supportive and harmonious home environment.

Therapy sessions focus on identifying patterns of interaction, addressing emotional bonds, and exploring the roles each family member plays. By working together, families can develop healthier dynamics, enhance emotional well-being, and build stronger connections.

If your family is experiencing ongoing conflictscommunication breakdowns, or significant life changes such as divorce, loss, or relocation, therapy might be beneficial. Other signs include frequent arguments, emotional distance, behavioral issues among family members, or challenges in parenting. Family therapy provides a structured environment to address these issues, improve communication, and strengthen relationships.

In your free 15-minute consultation, you and your family will have the opportunity to meet with a therapist to discuss your concerns, goals, and what you hope to achieve through family therapy. The therapist will explain their approach, how sessions are structured, and go over logistical details such as scheduling and fees.

This consultation helps ensure that the therapist is a good fit for your family’s needs. If you decide to move forward, you’ll discuss the next steps for starting therapy. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, gain clarity about the process, and explore how therapy can support your family’s growth and connection.

The initial consultation is free. Although the initial consultation is free, it’s important to respect the therapist’s time by being punctual and prepared. This brief meeting helps both you and the therapist determine if you’re a good fit for each other, and if you decide to move forward, you’ll discuss the next steps for regular sessions.

Our practice is fully virtual. If you have any hesitations about virtual therapy, we encourage you to discuss them during a consultation. We’ve found that virtual therapy can be just as effective—if not more so—than in-person therapy for many clients.

The duration of family therapy varies based on your family’s unique needs and goals. Sessions are typically held once a week or bi-weekly, with many families participating for several weeks to several months. Some families find short-term therapy beneficial for addressing specific challenges, while others may benefit from longer-term support to foster lasting change.
